Max de Wit - Week 6: Hard Surface Material

I really struggled with this one. I saw many people work in grayscale, maybe I should have done that too in hindsight. I paid attention to the shading and lighting direction but for some reason it doesn't feel three dimensional to me, am I missing something? I am looking forward to the class. :)

  1. I just wanted to mention that this exercise is not part of my final project. I was worried that my pirate guy would have not have enough hard surface material for this week's homework, so I made a Roman soldier. I think I focused too much on details this time. I left the class earlier so sorry if I didn't respond to your feedback.

  2. Hi Max, I see good dedication in this exercise. I think, the fact that you didn't start in greyscale is not a problem. However, the light coming all the way from one direction without much bouncing light from the other direction doesn't look very natural. I think the edges of the hard surface shapes can be improved and should be much sharper. In regards to reflectivity, the top of the helmet looks much better than the rest of the armor. I'd use some texture brushes as well in a more advanced stage of the rendering to make it feel credible. Nice work overall.
